Artesanías de Colombia is the entity in charge of supporting the work of Colombian artisans. It is a society of mixed public-private economy, whose mission and purpose is to expand the participation of artisans in the national productive sector. Rescuing and protecting the crafts and the artisan tradition is a top priority. Such assets express traditions, beliefs, thoughts, values, and knowledge, and keep alive the legacy of ancestral cultures. They are our letter of introduction to the world, and in each one of them, you can find the creative DNA of Colombians.

This project aims to help preserve the artisans’ workforce, protecting culture and intangible heritage in Colombia while creating a fair market for artisan production, both inside and outside the country. The support in design and production adds to the commercial factor with the purpose of bringing artisans greater visibility in local and national fairs, whilst improving their quality and standard of living.

“Artisanal activity is a game-changer practice, not only in Colombia but in the world: handicrafts are respectful of the environment, sustainable, aesthetically pleasant, culturally powerful, and politically representative.”
Rescue:

Recovering lost techniques and pieces due to lack of sources, technology, changing functions, or market absence. However, they can regain relevance with current demand.

Redesign and
innovation:

Start with identifying the cultural elements of a community, both material and immaterial, to contextualize them within current production techniques.

co-design:

This approach involves the active participation of both the designer and the artisan group. The goal of co-design is to create products that reflect cultural values while also meeting commercial demands in local, regional, or international markets.

The graphic and artisan products’ output is important, but getting support throughout the process becomes crucial, as much as establishing the correct dynamics between communities and designers. From that bond, we will gather the best results from the productive and cultural rescue.Design can serve as a mediator of handicraft objects’ use, aesthetic, and cultural symbolism, expressing the identity of their culture to buyers. Artisan activity should be contextualized within a specific social and environmental framework.

The goal of the processes behind indigenous design,
is to understand the community’s way of thinking by capturing the history and symbols behind each object.
Listening: Getting close to the community. The designer observes, asks, and documents. The purpose is to have a collection of material and immaterial culture that contributes references.
Co-create:  Rescuing the representative knowledge, products, or objects, within the different cultural processes of a community. Applying the design determinants that direct the object towards the appropriate commercial niche.
Consensus: Reviewing and validating the design proposals with the focus of strengthening the cultural traditions and specifications of the objective market.
